Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Expands Workforce Pipeline Through Registered Apprenticeships

As Southwest Virginia employers continue to navigate workforce shortages and evolving industry demands, the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center is expanding its role as a connector between education and employment through the growth of its Regional Apprenticeship program.

Launched in December 2025, the program is already gaining traction across the region, with multiple employers beginning the registration process and exploring how apprenticeship models can support long-term workforce development. The Center is working closely with industry partners to build customized apprenticeship pathways that align with real workforce needs.

Registered Apprenticeships offer a proven “earn while you learn” model, combining paid, on-the-job training with related classroom instruction. For employers, this approach provides a structured way to recruit, train, and retain talent. For participants, it creates a direct pathway into high-demand careers without the burden of traditional education costs.

At the Higher Education Center, the focus is on making apprenticeship programs accessible, flexible, and responsive to regional priorities. Initial efforts have centered on key industries such as healthcare, construction trades, and advanced manufacturing, with additional sectors expected to follow as the program continues to grow.

“We’re seeing strong interest from employers who are looking for practical, sustainable ways to build their workforce,” said Jenny Nichols, Registered Apprenticeship Coordinator. “Registered Apprenticeships allow businesses to invest in talent from day one, while giving individuals a clear path to a career right here in Southwest Virginia.”

Since the program’s launch, the Center has begun onboarding employer partners and guiding them through the registration process, which includes developing training plans, identifying related instruction, and ensuring alignment with state and federal apprenticeship standards. This hands-on support helps reduce barriers for employers who may be new to apprenticeship models.

The program also complements the Center’s broader portfolio of workforce and education initiatives, including healthcare training programs, dual enrollment opportunities, and partnerships with regional colleges and universities. Together, these efforts are designed to create seamless pathways from education to employment.

For the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, the long-term goal is clear: strengthen the regional workforce by creating opportunities that allow individuals to train, work, and stay in the region.
