Legacy & Planned Giving

The most meaningful gifts are those that continue changing lives for generations. By including the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation in your estate plans, you can create a lasting legacy that expands educational opportunities, strengthens our workforce, and helps build a more prosperous future for Southwest Virginia.

Planned gifts allow you to support the causes you care about while often providing financial and tax benefits for you and your loved ones. Whether your goals include caring for your family, reducing estate taxes, or making a significant charitable impact, we are honored to work with you and your professional advisors to help fulfill your charitable vision.

Ways to Leave Your Legacy

There are many ways to create a lasting impact, including:

· A gift through your will or living trust (bequest)

· Naming the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement account, life insurance policy, or other financial assets

· Establishing a charitable remainder trust or other planned giving arrangement

· Making gifts of appreciated assets, including securities or real estate

No matter the size of your gift, your legacy will help remove barriers to education, support innovative workforce programs, and create opportunities that strengthen our communities for years to come.

Give From your IRA

If you are age 70½ or older, you may be able to make a tax-efficient gift directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

A Qualified Charitable Distribution allows eligible donors to transfer funds directly from an IRA to a qualified charitable organization. Your gift can immediately support scholarships, workforce training, innovative educational programs, and the greatest needs of the Foundation.

Benefits may include:

· Satisfying all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), if applicable.

· Potentially reducing your taxable income.

· Making an immediate impact on students and the future workforce of Southwest Virginia.

Because every individual’s financial situation is unique, we encourage you to consult your financial or tax advisor to determine whether a Qualified Charitable Distribution is right for you.

To make an IRA charitable distribution, ask your IRA administrator to send your gift directly to:

Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation One Partnership Circle Abingdon, VA 24210

Tax ID (EIN): 80-0232306

If possible, please ask your IRA custodian to notify us when the gift is sent so we can properly acknowledge your generosity and ensure your gift is used according to your wishes. You may email us at fo********@******er.edu.

Matching Gifts

Many employers double (or even triple) charitable gifts. Search your company and amplify your impact at no extra cost.

Real Estate

A gift of appreciated real estate can create a lasting impact for learners across Southwest Virginia while offering potential tax advantages. Donating property—such as a primary residence, vacation home, undeveloped land, farmland, ranch property, or commercial real estate—is a meaningful way to invest in the future of our region.

When accepted by the Foundation, donated real estate is typically sold, and the proceeds are used to support scholarships, innovative workforce programs, educational initiatives, and the Foundation’s highest funding priorities. Your generosity helps remove barriers to education, strengthen the regional workforce, and create opportunities that transform lives for generations to come.

If you are considering a gift of real estate, we encourage you to contact us. We would be pleased to discuss your property, explain the gift acceptance process, and work with you and your professional advisors to ensure your charitable goals are achieved. You may email us at fo********@******er.edu.
