Community Wellness Day will bring together the Healthy Aging Fair and Appalachian Independence Center’s Pathways to Possibilities, with educational sessions, community resources, interactive activities, giveaways, food trucks and more.
Health screenings, educational workshops, disability resources and more will come together at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center on Monday, Oct. 5, during Community Wellness Day. Hosted in partnership with the Appalachian Independence Center, the free event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to people of all ages and abilities.
Community Wellness Day combines two complementary events. Inside the Higher Ed Center, the Healthy Aging Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can receive health screenings and vaccinations, explore wellness resources and attend educational sessions led by local physicians and other healthcare professionals. Information will also be available on aging, caregiving, housing, nutrition and other topics that support healthy, independent living.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to tour the Higher Ed Center’s Virtual Cadaver Lab and connect with local organizations offering health and wellness services.
Outside, Pathways to Possibilities will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Presented by the Appalachian Independence Center and Emory & Henry School of Health Sciences, the event will feature disability resources, assistive technology, accessibility tools and community services. Participants can also take part in a wheelchair obstacle course focused on disability awareness and accessibility.
Throughout the day, visitors can complete a five-stop Wellness Day Passport for a chance to win a prize basket. Passport activities include grip-strength and adaptive-solutions demonstrations with Emory & Henry occupational therapy students, free cane and walker adjustments, home-safety education and opportunities to explore both events.
Food trucks, giveaways and prize drawings will also be available.
