Energy Education Grant Provides Curriculum for Local Teachers

The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center was excited to host area middle school science teachers as they gathered for an engaging Energy Workshop, part of our new Energy Education Academy initiative. Sponsored by the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation and GO Virginia, this workshop was made possible by a grant dedicated to conducting a feasibility study on Energy Education.

The hands-on experience was an exciting opportunity for educators to explore innovative curriculum materials and resources designed to enrich their classrooms. Teachers were not only exposed to new concepts, but also equipped with the tools to inspire the next generation of scientists and energy innovators.

This Energy Education project is part of a broader initiative that aims to prepare students for future careers in the energy sector. In October 2024, the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation received a grant to explore the feasibility of middle school energy education. The focus of this project includes in-depth research, curriculum development, career pathway exploration, and the launch of a pilot Energy Education Academy.

The initiative is a collaborative effort, with key partners including Virginia Tech’s Southwest Center and Center for Coal & Energy Research, local school districts (Bristol City, Russell, Smyth, and Washington Counties), and Invest SWVA. Together, we are shaping an educational experience that will ensure students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in an ever-evolving workforce.

This pilot project is made possible through funding from the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation and GO Virginia, a state-funded initiative committed to strengthening Virginia’s economy by fostering job creation in strategic industries.
