Thirty-five years ago, the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center was established with a bold vision: to expand access to higher education and strengthen the economy of Southwest Virginia.
Since opening its doors in 1991, the Higher Ed Center has grown into a regional hub where education, workforce training, and community come together. Through partnerships with colleges and universities, K–12 schools, employers, healthcare organizations, and countless community partners, the Center has helped prepare thousands of students and professionals for success while supporting the evolving needs of the region.
Today, our campus is home to degree programs, healthcare simulation and professional development, apprenticeship services, lifelong learning opportunities, K-12 programs, and events that bring people together from across Southwest Virginia.
While much has changed over the past 35 years, our mission remains the same: to strengthen the regional economy by providing higher education and professional development training for the current and future workforce.
As we celebrate this milestone, we’re grateful to the educators, students, partners, employees, board members, supporters, and community members who have been part of our story.
This anniversary isn’t just about looking back. In the weeks ahead, we’ll be sharing stories, photos, and milestones from the past 35 years that have helped shape the Higher Ed Center and the region we serve. We hope you’ll celebrate with us as we look back on our history and ahead to what’s next.
