The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center recently welcomed Virginia Secretary of Education Dr. Jeffery Smith to campus as part of the Virginia Department of Education’s statewide listening tour.
During his visit, Secretary Smith toured the Center’s Regional Simulation Lab, where he saw firsthand how the space is being used to support hands-on training for healthcare students across the region.

He also spent time with instructors and staff, learning more about the Center’s programs and the impact they are having on learners at every stage.

In addition to the simulation lab, Secretary Smith had the opportunity to see students in action, including participants in the Southwest Virginia Healthcare Excellence Academy Lab School (HEALS) program and the A. Linwood Holton Governor’s School.

The visit provided an opportunity to share how the Center works collaboratively with regional partners to expand access to education and strengthen the workforce pipeline in Southwest Virginia. By bringing together institutions, instructors, and students in one place, the Center continues to play a key role in supporting educational and economic growth across the region.
