The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center (SWVHEC) was honored to welcome First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin for a visit showcasing the region’s innovative healthcare education initiatives.
During her visit, the First Lady met with staff and students from the Healthcare Excellence Academy Lab School (HEALS) program, a collaborative effort between SWVHEC and Emory & Henry University aimed at preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals in Southwest Virginia. Attendees shared insights about the program’s hands-on approach to healthcare education and its impact on students and the community.
As part of the tour, the First Lady explored the Center’s state-of-the-art immersive learning spaces, including the Anatomage Lab, which provides students with advanced 3D anatomy visualization, and the newly opened Immersion Room, designed to enhance interactive learning experiences.

“We are proud to partner with Emory & Henry University through the HEALS program to bring high-quality, innovative healthcare education to our region,” said David Matlock, executive director of the SWVHEC. “It was an honor to share these opportunities with First Lady Youngkin and highlight how hands-on learning experiences are preparing students for successful careers in healthcare.”

Dante Lee, executive director of HEALS, added, “Our collaboration with SWVHEC through HEALS exemplifies how partnerships can strengthen healthcare education in our communities. First Lady Youngkin’s visit emphasizes the importance of these initiatives and the positive impact they have on student learning and regional workforce development.”
