Culinary Classes at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center

Cooking Along the Crooked Road is a culinary program at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. The classes are taught by local chefs and accomplished cooks. These noncredit, hands-on enrichment, and stand-alone classes are open to the public. Adult and youth classes are available and meet in the culinary kitchen at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon. Cooking Raw: Beginnings and Endings $35.00
Monday, November 3, 2014 6-9 pm

This class, instructed by Raw Culinary Associate Chef, Jennifer Raichlin of Healing Meals, comes along just in time for the holiday season and will bring you healthy “Raw” appetizers and desserts which will amaze and delight your friends. She will discuss the health benefits of
choosing “Raw” foods as well as their special importance at this time of year. In this hands-on class you will create some appetizers and desserts suitable for any special gathering. Enjoy tasting and taking home delicious new recipes.

Gluten Free Holiday Baking $35.00
Saturday, November 8, 2014 9 am-12noon

Join Kristi Slaughter, the Gluten Free Guru, for this exciting gluten free baking class. Kristi will show you tips and tricks, for turning traditional holiday baked goods into delicious, gluten free, holiday treats. Learn how to convert your conventional recipes to gluten free masterpieces and take the guess work out of baking this holiday season!

Four and Twenty Blackbirds: Pies for the Holidays $35.00
Monday, November 17, 2014 6-9 pm

The holidays are fast approaching and what better time to hone your pie making skills with professional baker, Francine Ivery. Students will learn how to make the perfect basic crust and create new and delicious pies using traditional holiday ingredients. Both beginners and veteran pie bakers are welcome to join in learning new techniques as well as take home exciting new recipes and their own personal sized pie!
