International Business and Southwest Virginia
Southwest Virginia has an active international business base, a point that might surprise many people. The Tri-Cities region of Bristol, VA/TN and Kingsport - Johnson City, TN, ranks as the 72nd largest export center in the United States according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. In addition to several large multinational exporters in the region, there are a number of small and medium-size firms that are active and successful exporters. Chemicals, mining, electrical and air-conditioning equipment are the principal manufactured products for export.
The region is also home to a number of exporters of agricultural products
as well as software and engineering services. Our area colleges and universities also attract a number of foreign students to study in the region. Promotion of Southwest Virginia to international tourists and exports of regional crafts are also expanding initiatives.
