The Virginia Tech Southwest Center provides working professionals complete graduate degree programs and classes from nationally ranked programs based on the main campus in Blacksburg. Typically, most courses meet in the evening one night a week for fifteen weeks. The following programs are currently available through the Center.

Agricultural and Life Sciences

The Masters in Agricultural and Life Sciences program provides broad, scientific-based courses for professionals in agriculture, life sciences, and related fields. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, students will earn a master of science in agricultural and life sciences.

This program is intended primarily for place-bound working professionals that would like to pursue an advanced degree but cannot commute to Blacksburg to take daily or weekly classes. The unique program provides professionals the flexibility to earn a master's degree with a focus on a career-relevant area of specialization from the convenience of their own home.

Students are required to take a set of core courses and must select an area of concentration.

Five concentration options build upon a required core curriculum:

Career and Technical Education

The Master of Science (M.S.) degree program offered via distance learning is designed to develop instructional leaders in the field of Career and Technical Education (CTE). The program focuses on developing expertise in contextual learning, integration of CTE with core academics, philosophies regarding the role of CTE in public education, research application in the classroom, diversity, and instructional technology.

Delivery - Primarily interactive videoconferencing. A few online courses available.

Career Transition-Vocational Special Needs

An optional career transition endorsement in Vocational Special Needs is offered by Virginia Tech. This area of concentration evolved from vocational special needs and secondary special education. Transition services offer individuals with disabilities coordinated activities promoting movement into adult roles in employment, further education, community and independent living. Planning and delivery of these services involves students with disabilities, their families and teachers, and human service agencies.

A Master of Arts in Education or Educational Specialist program was developed by Virginia Tech in cooperation with school divisions to prepare principals and supervisors for leadership in schools.

The Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program (CGEP) is a distance learning graduate program of five universities in the State of Virginia. The CGEP offers qualified individuals the opportunity to earn a master's degree part time through on-site and televised graduate classes.

Health Promotion

This program is designed to provide students with information that will give them an understanding of the antecedents and correlates to many of today's health problems. Students will acquire skills and competencies that will enable them to develop, implement, and evaluate programs or interventions that are designed to promote, protect, or improve the health and well-being of various clientele. In addition, completion of this program enables most graduates to take the Certified Health Specialist (C.H.E.S.) examination.

This program combines the latest in technology and a variety of innovative instructional styles and methods to present students with a quality educational experience. This program is intended primarily for working professionals who would like or need to obtain a master’s degree, but do not have the time to attend classes on either a daily or a weekly basis. The delivery of courses in this program of study is done in such a manner that it makes achieving a master’s degree from Virginia Tech a reality, even for those individuals with the most hectic and varied work schedules. Students are afforded an opportunity to study and achieve their graduate goals in a relaxed and flexible atmosphere. This program can be completed in two calendar years or less.

Information Technology

The Graduate Program in Information technology is a combined degree and certificate program offered collaboratively by Virginia Tech's College of Engineering, and Pamplin College of Business. The program is an innovative blend of coursework in four related IT modules: networking, software development, business information systems and decision support systems. Virginia Tech's IT faculty have real world experience combined with cutting edge knowledge of industry trends. Each module is updated regularly to reflect industry trends.

Delivery - Completely online. Synchronous components.
Award - Master of Information Technology degree (30 credits) or Certificate only (12 credits)

Instructional Technology

The Instructional Technology (IT) Master's Degree program offered through the Department of Learning Sciences and Technologies at Virginia Tech is designed to meet the needs of professional educators in K-12 schools, community colleges, and higher education, as well as corporate trainers and other instructional development professionals outside of the academic realm. The focus of the program is on the creation of effective solutions to support learning and improved performance. Individual professional experiences are highly valued and will form the basis for most of the projects developed throughout the program. Because this is a distance program, all courses are offered electronically via the World Wide Web. Depending on the nature of the course, supporting instructional content may consist of Web-based tutorials, textbooks, CDs, or other appropriate materials.

The Instructional Technology Master's program (ITMA) is a rigorous graduate program designed to prepare you to be a professional instructional technologist. As a graduate of the Virginia Tech Instructional Technology Program, you will enjoy the respect and opportunities afforded by completing one of the finest Instructional Technology programs in the country.

Natural Resources

The College of Natural Resources offers a professional, non-thesis Master of Natural Resources (MNR) degree. The MNR program is a 33-credit-hour professional degree open to students from a wide variety of undergraduate fields. The focus of the Natural Resources Program in Northern Virginia is urban ecology and sustainability of natural resources, with special emphasis on sustainable use of fishery, wildlife and forest resources in the rapidly changing rural-urban environment. The MNR degrees is usually a terminal, non-research degree, intended to give the candidate additional post-baccalaureate education in natural resources. This interdisciplinary program has a dual objective of training graduates for professional employment in natural resources and instilling conceptual and critical thinking necessary for lifelong learning and career development. Graduates are able to assume professional responsibilities in a wide variety of positions in public service or in the private sector.

Political Science

The Online Masters of Arts in Political Science is identical in course content, requirement, and work load to the widely respected and high-quality residential MA degree program that has been offered in Blacksburg since 1969. The M.A. degree program features a broad array of methodologically sophisticated, theoretically grounded, and empirically oriented graduate courses to new audiences anywhere in the world.

There are three ways to participate in eLearning at Virginia Tech: 1) as a degree-seeking student, 2) as a non-degree Commonwealth Campus student taking courses for university credit, or 3) as a student in non-credit, online training. Students wishing to work towards a degree from a distance must apply for admission and be accepted into a program just like any on-campus student (note that Virginia Tech does not offer Bachelor's degrees from a distance). Students who simply want to earn credit for a class or two must apply as non-degree (undergraduate) or Commonwealth Campus (graduate) students. Students taking non-credit training can register immediately. Read below for more information on these options.
 
  Degree-Seeking Students:

To be admitted to a degree program, you must submit an application to the program through the Graduate School. (Undergraduate degrees and admissions via eLearning are not available.)

If you are already admitted and working towards a degree from Virginia Tech (either graduate or undergraduate), you must use the Hokie SPA to register for all credit courses, eLearning or otherwise.
 
  Non-degree or Commonwealth Campus Students:

If you are not interested in obtaining a degree at this time but simply want to take several courses for credit, you can be admitted to Virginia Tech under non-degree status or Commonwealth Campus status. IMPORTANT! Not all eLearning courses are open to non-degree students. Check the course descriptions for details before submitting an application.
  • Graduate Level
    1. Commonwealth Campus -- Submit a photocopy of your official undergraduate or graduate transcript or diploma.
    2. Non-Degree -- Submit your official undergraduate or graduate transcript or diploma.
    3. If you filled out the portion of the application requesting tuition rates for Virginia residents, you must submit a photocopy of your Virginia driver's license or most recent state tax forms as proof of residency.
    4. If you are requesting reduced rates for K-12 employees in Virginia, you must submit a signed, K-12 tuition waiver form (http://www.vto.vt.edu/k12.html).

  • Undergraduate Level
    1. If applying for In-state tuition complete a residency form. Go to http://www.vto.vt.edu/instate.html to print the form.

    3. A photocopy of your high school or undergraduate transcript of credits to date.
