Virginia Tech—Master of Education or Educational Specialist in
Curriculum and Instruction (Reading Specialist)
The Virginia Tech School of Education
will simultaneously offer two degree programs—Educational Specialist in
Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.S.) and Master of Education in Curriculum
and Instruction (MAED)—the Reading Specialist Program at Virginia Tech
Southwest Center, located at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education
Center in Abingdon, beginning in January, 2008.
Students in both programs will take the same schedule of courses over a
4 year period of time, one course each fall, spring, and summer
semester. In the final year, the Master’s students will complete a final
Master’s project and the Educational Specialist students will complete a
final Ed.S. project. Students will prepare these projects while taking
the two final courses on the Role of the Reading Specialist.
This program prepares experienced teachers to earn endorsement in the
Commonwealth of Virginia as Reading Specialists. This K-12 endorsement
enables successful candidates to take positions in schools across the
state. The program has received national recognition from the
National

International Reading Association (IRA). This program meets the high
standards set by these professional organizations.
